The Winery

Chiarella Winery currently operates a small tasting room in Angels Camp elegantly decorated in a modern, Italian style. In addition to the estate wine, there is olive oil and other gift items available for sale. The wines are currently made at a local custom crush facility, but there are a winery in the works, and should be open in the not too distant future.

The Vineyards

The estate currently has 900 vines in production on their Meacham Ranch Road property, not far from the Angels Camp tasting room location. The winery purchases grapes from both Calaveras and Amador County to produce their wines.

The Wines

The winery’s Cabernet Sauvignon is made from grapes sourced in the vineyards of Brice Station in Calaveras county. Although fruit forward, the wine has great acidity and a nice complexity commonly associated with high altitude grapes. Chiarella currently offers a fairly rare late harvest Barbera, produced from grapes in Amador County. The wine is not at all cloying, but just slightly sweet with good acidity and great fruit. The winery also produces limited batches of Zinfandel, Barbera, and Syrah and will soon be releasing an estate Sangiovese.

The Winemaker

Nathan Carella is the owner and winemaker at Chiarella. Nathan grew up in an Italian family with a deep passion for food and wine. A respiratory therapist by profession, he pursued the art of winemaking as a hobby before opening the winery, with the tasting room opening in 2006 and the winery becoming bonded in 2007.
