The Winery

Boeger winery has a long and distinguished history in El Dorado County. The site was originally a farm and winery established in the 1850s by the Lombardo family. Although the original winery survived most of Prohibition by producing wines for local churches, it finally closed just around the time the 18th amendment was repealed. In 1972, Greg Boeger purchased the estate and established the first commercial winery in El Dorado County since Prohibition. Greg was raised in a family of Winemakers. In the mid 1800’s, his grandfather, Anton Nichelini, founded Nichelini Winery, the second oldest winery continuously operated by the same family in California. Greg carried on the family tradition when he purchased the estate in El Dorado County. Greg is not only a gracious host, but also is considered a cornerstone of the regeneration of fine wines in this region. The tasting room is beautifully designed and offers not only fine wines, but gourmet cheeses and other picnic supplies as well. There is a landscaped garden below the tasting room that offers a picnic area to soak in the ambiance of the beautiful foothill scenery.

The Vineyards

The estate has 90 acres of vineyards,30 acres of which surround the winery, ranging in elevation from 2,100’ to 2,300’, and grows 30 different varietals. As can be told from the difference in elevations, the slopes are sometimes steep and the soil rocky. Although 90% of the fruit is estate grown, the winery also purchases grapes from local vineyards in the El Dorado area.

The Wines

The Boegers produce a large selection of high quality wines covering a vast number of styles from Bordeaux and Burgundian to Italian and Spanish. The winery has pioneered many varietals and blends not previously seen in El Dorado County. Boeger winery was one of the first in the area to produce a Merlot, Barbera, Pinot Noir or Tempranillo.

The Winemaker

Greg has moved on to managing the 90 acres of vineyard owned or leased by the estate. His son, Justin, who has a degree in viticulture and fermentation science from UC Davis, has been the winemaker at the two family wineries since 2000.
