The Winery
Black Sheep Winery recently moved its tasting room to a beautiful farm house in the center of the small town of Murphys. The grounds are delightfully landscaped and offer plenty of room to relax when you taste.
The Vineyards
The winery buys their grapes from vineyards located in both Calaveras and Amador County. The vineyards range in elevation from 1500 to 3300 feet, with the highest one being in Calaveras County. They get their Zinfandel grapes from the famous Clockspring Vineyard in Amador.
The Wines
Black Sheep makes a very big, fruit forward Zinfandel from their Clockspring grapes, which they consider to be their signature wine. They also make a bold and nicely structured Cabernet Franc, which comes from Calaveras County vineyards thought to be some of the highest in California at 3300 feet.
The Winemaker
Steve Millier graduated from Fresno State University with a degree in enology. During his 30 years experience as a winemaker he worked for David Bruce Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains prior to coming to the foothills and working at such wineries as Stevenot and Ironstone. Steve and wife Liz also own Milliaire Winery.
