The Winery

The winery at Domaine Becquet is located on 13 acres of land on Lime Creek in the Valley Springs area of Calaveras County. There are two tasting rooms, one at the estate and the other in the town of Murphys. The Winery is designed to resemble a French hunting estate, and features a restaurant that serves lunch Wednesday through Thursday. The food is created in a French and German traditional style. In addition to the estate wines and excellent food, the winery produces olive oil and honey, available for sale in the gift area of both tasting rooms.

The Vineyards

All grapes come from vineyards in the Lodi area of California. Although considered part of the very warm Central Valley, the Lodi area is blessed by cooling breezes in the afternoon and evening that allow the warm region to cool, and thus allows the grapes to rest.

The Wines

Not only are the tasting rooms done in the French style, but the wine is as well. There is a belief that less is more; less alcohol, less filtration, softer oak and overall less intervention which combines to produce a lighter, more elegant wine in style. The winemaker strives to keep these fairly fruit forward wines at alcohol levels below 13.5%, unusual for this region of California.

The Winemaker

The winemaker at Domaine Becquet is also the proprietor, Charles Becquet. Although a fifth generation Californian, Charles was raised in France where he worked as an international management and political consultant.
