The Winery

Barden Stevenot, a 5th generation resident of Calaveras County, is the founder of Stevenot winery. He is most often credited as being responsible for bringing fine wine production back to Calaveras County. In the late 1960s, he bought the Shaw Ranch and converted an old hay barn into a winery. He planted vineyards, and in 1978 the winery opened. The 500-acre estate includes one of 2 tasting rooms, a wonderful picnic area under a grape arbor on the lawn, and an outdoor amphitheatre. The tasting room includes gourmet food products and gift items for sale. There is a second, smaller tasting room in downtown Murphys, located in what used to be the town butcher shop. The Munari family purchased the winery in 2006, beginning a new era at Stevenot.

The Vineyards

The calcium and iron rich shale and limestone soils, with the estate’s multiple microclimates, allow for the production of 18 different grape varieties. Included in the vineyards are Pinot Noir, Barbera, Albariño, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Graciano, Merlot, Mourvedre, Muscat Canelli, Petite Sirah, Picpouille Blanc, Pinot Gris, Syrah, Tempranillo, Verdelho, Viognier and Zinfandel.

The Wines

The wines of Stevenot are known for their big, bold flavors, upfront fruit, and great balance. They offer a wonderfully rich and complex Tempranillo, as well as a delightful Prosecco reminiscent of the Italian version.

The Winemaker

The director of winemaking at Stevenot is Kate MacDonald. She originally worked for Stevenot at the beginning of her career and returned in 2007 after working throughout the foothills and Napa Valley.
