The Winery

Owners Mike and Diane Naggiar began as Viticultural hobbyists in Saratoga, CA. After 32 years in marketing and sales for Hewlett Packard, Mike decided to retire and grow grapes full time. After a long search, the Naggiars found 160 acres in Grass Valley and started their vineyard. After several years of vineyard management, the family decided to start a winery in this region of big skies, horse ranches, and grazing cattle.

The Vineyards

The estate consists of 63 acres of hillside vineyards planted on rocky soils at the 1300 foot elevation. The diurnal shift can be up to 30 degrees, which contributes to the excellent acidity of the wines. There is combination of Rhone, Bordeaux and Italian vines planted on the estate. The vineyard employs a combination of multiple weather stations and moisture sensors to not only manage the day to day decisions on the vineyard, but help build a more complete image of the terroir for future vintages.

The Wines

The wines are made in a fruit forward fashion, with characteristics of the grape very evident in the final wine. The specialty of the house is Rhone Varietals, but excellent Sangiovese based wines and spicy Bordeaux varietals are also included in the mix.

The Winemaker

The wines of Naggiar Vineyards are made with the help of consulting winemaker, Derek Irwin. Mr. Irwin has a degree from University of California, Davis, and years of winemaking experience with such wineries as Cosentino, in Yountville, and Bouchaine and Viansa, in Los Carneros. He is currently consulting for wineries across California, South America, Italy, and Spain.
