The Winery

This relatively young, family operated winery began business in 2004 and produces all of its wines from estate grown grapes. Located just a few miles east of Mariposa on Highway 140, the estate is above the 3000 foot elevation which results in warm days and cool nights. The main building and cellar extends 60 feet into the hillside, allowing for natural temperature and humidity control.

The Vineyards

The vineyards are surrounded by beautiful, heritage sized oaks and towering pines with incredible views of the high Sierras. Nine of the estate’s 45 acres were originally planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Zinfandel. The Zinfandel has been removed and Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne were recently added.

The Wines

Currently the winery offers estate grown red Bordeaux and Rhone style wines. The first harvest of the white Rhone varietals is expected soon with the first white wines offered within the next two years.

The Winemaker

This is truly a family owned and operated winery, with family members performing all jobs except pruning and picking the grapes. Doug Chappell, a teacher turned vintner, is the winemaker at Chappell.
