The Winery

Located between the Gold Rush towns of Sonora and Columbia on Highway 49, the winery is situated on a knoll with local views of the vineyards and surrounding hills. The tasting room offers a whimsical selection of gourmet wine and food supplies. Directly outside the main doors is a large patio area at the entrance with tables and benches to enjoy the ambiance.

The Vineyards

Mt. Brow Winery is located at the 2150-foot elevation in the beautiful southern end of the Sierra Foothills AVA. The twelve year old estate vineyards are planted to Merlot, Zinfandel and Sangiovese. Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grapes are purchased from local vineyards.

The Wines

The winery produces a fairly large, but nicely rounded Merlot with good fruit and a long finish. They also produce a very interesting port style wine made from Sangiovese, Zinfandel and Touriga Nacional. It was a very different Vanilla/Chocolate flavor in the finish that makes it exceptional not only with chocolate but also with other bakery treats. The winery specializes in Sangiovese done in a light, fruity style with a good acid structure.

The Winemaker

Jim Costello, the winemaker for Mt. Brow is the grandson of an Italian immigrant and home winemaker with a lifetime passion for wine. He followed his grandfather’s footsteps and soon converted that to love to a commercial operation in 2003.
