The Winery

Renaissance Vineyard and Winery is located in a remote area of Yuba called Oregon House. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with formal European style gardens, ponds, and great vineyard views. The tasting room has floor to ceiling windows that offer a view of the small lake. There are nearby picnic tables where you can enjoy your lunch. The winery offers numerous tasting experiences, ranging in price from $10 to $35. The tour of the rose garden takes you through some of the most beautiful gardens, classic sculptures, and fountains to be found outside of Hearst Castle.

The Vineyards

The original vineyards were planted in 1975-1982 in the numerous microclimates that surround the estate. After over thirty years of experimenting with getting the right grape to fit the terroir, the original 265 acres of vineyards has been reduced to the 65 best suited to the climate and soil. The vineyards are all found between 1700 and 2350 feet in an area known for hot summer days and cool evenings

The Wines

The low vineyard yields and the soil in the region lead to wines with an unusual ability to exhibit significant minerality and spiciness. The Cabs are big, powerful wines that are smooth drinking, but can easily age 20 years. In fact, the winery just recently released wines from the 1999 and 2000.

The Winemaker

Gideon Beinstock, the winemaker at Renaissance, studied winemaking in the Burgundy and Rhone region of France and believes in a minimalist approach to winemaking. By using gentle extraction methods and not filtering or fining, he can create wines that accurately express the terroir of the vineyard, and not just the grape varietal. Gideon is also owner and winemaker at Clos Saron.
