The Winery
Il Gioiello means ‘the jewel’ in Italian. This is a perfectly accurate description of its fantastic location on a scenic knoll with striking vineyard and foothill views. The estate is located on a finger of land bordered by the Fiddletown, Fair Play and Shenandoah AVAs.
The Vineyards
There are twenty acres of vineyards planted on the estate at the 2300-foot elevation. The thirteen varieties range between French and Rhone originated grapes, with even the Cabernet Franc being an Italian clone. The first vines were planted in 1999 and new sections continue to be planted on the 80 acre estate.
The Wines
Il Gioiello wines are designed with a decided European flare. This shows itself in the complex flavors and great acidity which are particularly evident in the Viognier. The wine exhibits a great deal of fruit with none of the fatness that the varietal can lean towards. Coming soon is a Super Tuscan style wine utilizing the estate Montepulciano grapes.
The Winemaker
David Fenech is a graduate of the University of California, Davis with a degree in viticulture and enology. He started his career at Amador Foothill Winery prior to coming to Il Gioiello.
