The Winery

The tasting room for Primus is small but upscale and modern. The bar is tastefully done in a beautiful dark cherry wood, with an inset glass case full of antique wine bottle openers. Tasteful pieces of artwork are hung throughout the room, and the light fixtures are actually wine bottles suspended from the ceiling with their bottoms removed. The winery charges a $5 fee to taste, half of which can be applied to the purchase of a bottle of wine and includes the logo glass.

The Vineyards

The estate has Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel and Syrah grapes which were planted in 1999 and 2000. All of their wines are made from estate grapes, with the exception of the Zinfandel, which is made from estate grapes blended with grapes from a neighboring vineyard.

The Wines

Primus takes pride in the fact that, by focusing their winemaking on only a couple of varietals, they can emphasize the subtleties of the terroir and enhance the distinguishing characteristics of the grape. These are wonderfully structured and focused wines that speak beautifully of the vineyards they come from. All are aged in new French Oak and are 100% varietals. These wines are not available anywhere but the winery and often sell out within weeks of their release.

The Winemaker

The winemaker at Primus is consulting enologist Brian Bumgarner. Mr. Bumgarner also owns and manages his own wine consulting business. His philosophy of winemaking at Primus is small batches of hand crafted wines, with little manual intervention during the process.
