The Winery

Sierra Starr has two tasting rooms, one at the winery and one in downtown Grass Valley. The one located in the historic downtown region of Grass Valley is a very modern facility with a long bar to accommodate a large number of tasters. The tasting room at the winery has a real cabin in the woods feel, with semi-rustic wood interior and lots of natural light. The winery is open only during special events.

The Vineyards

The Estate grows Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. When the Starrs bought the existing vineyard in 1995, it had been planted to five acres of Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel. The new owners planted one more acre of Cabernet Franc and leased five acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

The Wines

The winery makes wine in a wide range of styles including a slightly sweet Sparkling Wine, a crisp and bright Sauvignon Blanc, a round and buttery Chardonnay and a fruity Old Vine Clone Zin. Most of the wines of Sierra Starr are estate grown and bottled.

The Winemaker

The Starrs owned a nursery in Monterey Bay when they purchased the vineyard in Grass Valley with the intention of moving their nursery to the estate. Instead, Phil Starr planted more vineyards and opened a winery, as so often happens when the vineyard and wine making bug strikes.
