The Winery

The Ramey Schulten Winery was founded by Grant Ramey, the original vineyard manager for Renaissance Winery and Edward Schulten, a master sommelier and winemaker from the Netherlands. The two had been winning awards at amateur contests for over 20 years when they decided to open a commercial winery in 2004. They currently share space for their winery with Renaissance, in the main winery building on the estate.

The Vineyards

The winery currently leases sections of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Mourvedre, and Grenache vineyards from Renaissance Winery. They also lease vineyards which produce five of the standard Portuguese varietals for production of Port wines.

The Wines

The winemakers at Ramey Schulten do not believe in producing wines above 14% alcohol to keep the alcohol, acid, fruit and tannin in balance. It comes through in the wines. The Cabernet had a great structure of tannin and acid, unbelievable licorice and chocolate characteristics and some great minerality in the finish. The Syrah is beautifully balanced, has a great dusty earthiness, and is smooth going down. The Port style wine has a lovely balance between fruit, sweetness, and acid making it perfect as a dessert after dinner.

The Winemaker

Winemaking duties are shared by Grant Ramey and Edward Schulten. Grant, who studied at UC Davis, is a native of Yuba County and was the vineyard manager for Renaissance for 28 years. Edward Schulten was born in the Netherlands and learned his winemaking style from some of the great wine institutions in France.
