List of Wineries in Sierra Foothill Viticultural Area

The Sierra Foothill AVA is one of the largest in the country, covering 2.6 million acres. With the exception of the far eastern edge of the El Dorado AVA, all other foothill Viticultural areas are located within this master region. The region is 170 miles long, crosses eight counties and lies between 1,000 and 3,000 feet of elevation. The Sierra Foothill region is known for its multitude of microclimates, granitic and loam soils, a yearly rainfall averaging 35 inches, cool nights and warm days. Some microclimates are close to that of the Italian wine growing regions of the Mediterranian and others more closely resemble the Rhone River Valley of France. These multiple characteristics allow for an almost limitless variety of wine grapes that can be grown. Although Zinfandel is still the most common grape planted, Italian, Rhone and Bordeaux varieties are well represented.
