The southern most county in the Sierra Foothill AVA and far from the effects of the sea breeze, this is an area with warm, dry days in the summer. This is also an area with incredible views of the high Sierras that send the wine region cooling evening breezes that contributes to the complexity and good acidity of the local wines.

      

Butterfly Creek Winery - Mariposa, California The Winery The drive to the winery takes you through the 200 acres of beautiful foothill scenery including the picturesque St. Genevieve Chapel amongst the vines. The winery and tasting room are located next to a grassy picnic area near the banks of Butterfly Creek. The tasting room is small and cozy with some food and wine treats for sale. This is a perfect area for that picnic lunch and a nice bottle... The Winemaker The winery owner Robert M. Gerken is the winemaker for Butterfly Creek. The family purchased the estate in 1972 and soon began planting the estate vineyards before opening the winery. Read More... Chappell Winery & Vineyards - Mariposa, California The Winery This relatively young, family operated winery began business in 2004 and produces all of its wines from estate grown grapes. Located just a few miles east of Mariposa on Highway 140, the estate is above the 3000 foot elevation which results in warm days and cool nights. The main building and cellar extends 60 feet into the hillside, allowing for natural temperature and humidity control. The Winemaker This is truly a family owned and operated winery, with family members performing all jobs except pruning and picking the grapes. Mount Bullion Vineyards - Mariposa, California The Winery Mount Bullion is located in the rolling foothills along Highway 49 about 9 miles north of Mariposa, near the town of Mt. Bullion. The estate is situated in a picturesque Foothill valley not far from the site of John Fremont’s Las Mariposas Grant. The Winemaker Husband and wife team of Harold and Kris Casto manage the vineyards and winery of Mount Bullion. In addition to managing the vineyards and tasting room, they are the winemakers at the estate. Read More... Silver Fox Vineyards - Mariposa, California The Winery Located a few miles east of Mariposa at the 3000 ft elevation. This high elevation allows the estate to take full advantage of the cool evening influences from the high Sierras directly east. The tasting room is in a barn style building with a wide verandah complete with a picnic tables and chairs to relax in the middle of a hard day of tasting. The Winemaker The winery and vineyards are operated by owners Marvin and Karen Silver, and Tanya and Davis Zastrow. Marvin Silver also takes on the winemakers duties. Read More...
